Sam is really dead and Dean is inconsolable. He refuses to bury Sam. Instead, he makes a deal with the crossroads demon to ressurrect his brother in exchange for his soul in one years time. A resurrected Sam, along with Dean, Bobby and Ellen join forces to prevent an imminent demonic invasion. They try to stop Jake, Sam murderer and a pawn of the yellow-eyed demon, from unlocking a gateway to hell with the antique colt. Jake is coldly killed by Sam, but the doorway is unlocked and swings open, letting hundreds of demons and other supernatural beings out of hell. Dean grabs the colt and confront’s the yellow-eyed demon while Sam, Bobby and Ellen push close the doors. The demon easily disarms Dean and turns the gun on him instead. An apparition appears behind it and grabs it and pulls it right out of the host body. Dean retrieves the colt and fires it, killing the demon as it is recovering from the surprise attack. The apparition is John Winchester, escaped from hell through the doorway. He smiles at his sons then vanishes. There is a brief moment of satisfaction at killing their nemesis. Then Sam confronts Dean about his selling his soul. The season ends with the brothers resolved at stopping the released demon army, Sam resolved at finding a way to save Dean, and strong hints that Sam is not the same as he was before his death. -
Praises: This season finale was a riveting episode that had me sitting on the edge of my seat. It had a shock impact even bigger than that of the season one’s finale and it’s ending was much better. We weren’t left hanging about the immediate fate of the Winchesters. There was actual resolution of a major show arc and the beginnings of new and interesting plots for season 3. The stunning twist of Sam actually being dead…not just badly injured, but stone cold dead…was completely unexpected. What Dean did to resurrect him, will cause BIG troubles ahead for the Winchesters, troubles that cannot end well. The invasion of the demonic army, Sam coldly shooting Jake as he begged for his life, Dean’s success in killing the yellow-eyed demon, and John Winchester’s reappearance seemed almost anticlimactic in comparison. So many things happened in this episode that it was too much to take in in one viewing. On my second viewing, I realized that this episode was also the most touchy-feely show of Supernatural ever. Dean was affectionately touched, hugged, and kissed (though that was by a demon) more times than in any episode other than Route 666 and possibly, What Is And What Should Never Be. There was even a real brotherly hug of the kind that fans have been begging for for ages. It was sweet to see how Dean is surrounded by people who care for him deeply, though the word “love” was not actually said. This was a great ending to a great season. I was left eagerly anticipating season 3, which thank goodness, is going to happen.

Nags: This episode’s story that me so completely absorbed that I didn’t notice any nitpicks at all. The only thing bad about it was that it was the last episode of the season. It will be a very long 4 month wait for next season to begin.
