  After an encounter with a Djinn, a genie-like creature that feeds on humans, Dean wakes up to find himself in a world where the Winchesters have never been visited by the yellow-eyed demon. His mother is alive; Sam’s attending law school and engaged to Jessica; and Dean is in a stable relationship. Dean happily settles into his world, until he finds out that all the people who the Winchesters saved are now dead. He goes hunting for the genie, only to realize that he is probably unconscious and dreaming, while being fed upon by the Djinn, himself. He stabs himself to force himself awake. When he opens his eyes, he find himself bound and strung up and the real Sam has come to rescue him. The Djinn attacks as Sam is cutting him down. Dean manages to free himself and kill the Djinn as it was about to zap Sam. The brothers walk away with another win, another rescue, and some more emotional scars.

• Praises: This is the episode I most looked forward to seeing this season. It dealt with a scenario that the majority of fans wonder about: what would the Winchesters’ life be like, if the demon had never crossed their path? (more…)

Folsom Prison Blues

  When an old prison cell block is reopened and several people die, Sam and Dean risk their freedom and their lives to help Deacon, an old marine buddy of their Dad’s. They arrange to be arrested in Arkansas so they would be sent to the haunted detention center. When the FBI shows up and threaten extradition, they are forced to work quickly. When Dean barely survives an encounter with the ghost, they learn that it is not the serial killer, Mark Moody, as they first thought, but a prison nurse from the 70’s. Dean persuades their lawyer, a woman of course, to help by finding out how the nurse died and where she is buried. Then the brothers escape from jail with the help of Deacon, who was the prison warden. With the FBI on their trail, they dig up the nurse’s body and burn it just in time to stop it from killing Deacon. In the meantime, the FBI is misdirected to the wrong cemetery by their crafty lawyer.

• Praises: John Shiban has hit another one out of the ballpark with this script! This man writes some of the best Supernatural episodes. I was reminded once again why I love this show. Dean was snarky, tough, and utterly devoted to his dad’s legacy. Sam was the voice of reason, (more…)

Hollywood Babylon

  The brothers go to Hollywood and onto the set of the film, "Hell Hazers II" where the unusual death of a crewman turns out to be faked. When a studio exec and a producer really do get killed, Sam and a starstruck Dean, stay on, disguised as "PA's", to investigate. The script writer is angry about the edits to his work and is using black magic to summon ghosts to kill those responsible. When Walter foolishly breaks his talisman to stop Sam from taking it, the released ghosts turn on him and tear him apart. The movie returns to production with some additional edits to include ghost hunting techniques used by Sam and Dean. And the brothers walk off into the fake sunset, but not before Dean personally demonstrated how good a "PA" he is to the lead actress.

• Praises: This a light hearted followup to the mostly angst-filled "Heart". I liked how this episode poked fun at the whole horror genre of which Supernatural itself is a part. The fake ad for "Hell Hazers II" was a nice touch. (more…)

Heart

Heart

  The brothers are in San Francisco to investigate several mauling deaths that coincided with the lunar cycle, the handiwork of a werewolf. (Did you notice that the coroner was Stargate SG-1’s Dr. Janet Fraiser…Yeah SG-1!). Their initial suspect is the stalker ex-boyfriend of a woman who worked for the last victim. When that boyfriend is attacked and Dean interrupts the scene, they find out that Madison herself, is the werewolf. However, Sam has fallen for her and wants to save her. He convinces Dean that they should try to cure her of the lycanthropy by killing the werewolf who originally turned her. When this does not work, Madison, now realizing that she is a monster, asks Sam to shoot her himself. Sam, after much angst, complies.

• Praises: This was one of the better episodes of this season. It had almost everything that us fan girls adore about Supernatural and more! There were jokes, lots of brotherly moments, angst galore, and we finally got to see some hot, naked sex. Damn, Jared has been working out! What awesome pecs he has. (more…)

Roadkill

Supernatural Season 2, episode #16.

  An accident victim flags the Winchester brothers down on a remote stretch of highway. She is being chased by the ghost of man killed on that same highway exactly 15 years ago. Coming to her aid, the brothers search for the human remains of this ghost. Like always, they find the grave and destroy the ghost just in the nick of time. This time it was Sam who does the grave digging/body burning and Dean who stays behind to protect the girl- a role reversal that didn’t quite gel. Afterwards, the brothers drive Molly into town where, after looking at her husband, now 15 years older and remarried, she is forced to face the fact that she herself, is also a ghost. In fact, she is the ghost of the very person who killed the man on the highway in a car accident 15 years ago.

• Praises: I loved the way the story unfolded in this episode. It began from an outsider’s perspective and stayed there until the end. It was very interesting to see the brothers from this third-party viewpoint. I like that you had to piece together what was going on right along with Molly. At least, that was how it was supposed to be. The reality was that most viewers, like myself, knew exactly what was happening right away. Only someone new to the show would have been drawn into the mystery and been surprised by the ending. Despite this, the mini flashbacks to explain some of the questions after the big revelation, was well done and successfully created an “ah, so that’s what was happening” feeling. (more…)

Tall Tales

  Strange happenings on a college campus has the brother’s mystified and getting on each other’s nerves. Unable to solve the mystery of the killer-ghost/alien-abduction/alligater-in-the-sewer problem while fighting with each other over the computer and the Impala, they call in Bobby to help. His impartial eyes sees this as work of a supernatural trickster who is also playing games with the brothers to keep them from catching him. Cornering the trickster-come-janitor in a lecture hall, Sam has to fight off a chainsaw wielding apparition and Dean, two scantily clad amazon beauties with super strength, before the brothers manage to stake him. Thinking the job is done, they head out of town. But the trickster has tricked them once again and is alive and well.

• Praises: This was an hysterically funny episode filled with slapstick humor. I have never laughed so much during Supernatural before. Depicting the brothers’ exaggerated views of each other was brilliant. The scene of Dean stuffing his face had me laughing so hard I was in tears. And having Sam’s lecture interpreted by Dean as “blah blah blah blah” was equally funny. (more…)

Nightshifter

  Sam and Dean investigate two violent robberies that were seemingly inside jobs done by employees who later committed suicide. They learn it’s a shapeshifter after visiting Ronald, a paranoid bank security guard who showed them a copy of security tape in which the robber had the telltale eye flare. Sam and Dean go a bank that is a potential target only to get caught up in a hostage situation triggered by Ronald, who had his own misguided plan to capture what he thinks is a “mandroid”. The brothers and Ronald search for the shapeshifter inside the bank while outside, police, SWAT, and later, the FBI, gather. Ronald meets a tragic end, but the brothers get the bad thing, then cleverly escape wearing a hot new disguise: SWAT gear.

• Praises: This was a great episode, the best since “Crossroads Blues”. It was fast paced and funny and there were a few nail biting moments, though not scary. I absolutely loved that the show combined a lot of the season one elements that us fangirls adore. The brother’s wore their hottest disguises: feds in suits and alarm company employees in uniform. If they could have thrown in the priest’s disguise as well, I would have been in heaven. (more…)
