When Dean is critically injured during a hunt, Sam drives them to Ford City, Nebraska seeking a miracle cure. Roy Legrange, an evangelist healer, heals Dean’s damaged heart, but at the cost of another person’s life. Roy’s wife uses black magic to bind a reaper and force it to trade lives under the guise of Roy's healing. Sam breaks the binding spell and the released reaper takes it’s revenge on Roy’s wife.

A call from an old girlfriend sends Dean to Cape Girardeau, Missouri where he rekindles their relationship and finds a ghost truck that is killing black men. Unable to burn the remains of a truck, Sam directs Dean to lure the killer truck into hallowed ground where it is destroyed.

Following the clues from another of Sam’s predictive nightmares, the brothers head to Saginaw, Michigan, where they find Max, a troubled young man with psychic abilities. As Max kills, Sam nightmares turn into daytime visions of the event. Sam convinces Max not to kill again, but he is unable to save Max himself, who commits suicide.

The brothers go to Hibbing, Minnesota to investigate local disappearances when Sam, himself, suddenly vanishes. With the help of a woman cop, Dean finds Sam held prisoner by a Bender-like family who kills people for sport. Attempting rescue, Dean is captured, but Sam manages to escape and rescues Dean, instead.

The brothers are lured to Chicago by a pair of grisly murders done by invisible, shadow killers. They encounter demon Meg, who uses them to set a trap for their father. They escape and Meg is attacked by her own minions, the shadow deva. John shows up and the family is briefly reunited, but they are set upon by Meg’s shadow minions. Sam scares them away with a flare and the Winchesters head out of town, going their separate ways once again.

A web site posting draws the Winchesters to Richardson, Texas where a haunted house prank has caused a spirit to manifest that is immune to their usual arsenal. The tulpa’s existance is linked to the internet audience’s widespread belief in it. Unable to convince the web site owners to shutdown the site, Dean burns down the house that the spirit is tied to.

A new set of coordinates from their dad sends the brothers to Fitchburg, Wisconsin where a striga, a kind of witch, is making children mortally ill. Against Sam’s objections, Dean recruits a brave young boy to help lure the striga so that they can kill it while it’s vulnerable. This risky plan succeeds and the children recover from their mysterious illness.

A haunted painting brings the Winchester brothers to New Paltz, New York, where they enter the world of wealth and privilage…and are promptly thrown out. Sam becomes romantically involved with a woman who helps them locate and destroy the remains of the little girl whose murderous spirit was haunting the painting.

When an old friend of their father’s is killed by vampires, the brothers travel to Manning, Colorado where the Winchesters reunite as a family. John tells his sons about a special antique colt that can kill anything supernatural. They free the vampires victims and get proof of the Colt’s power when John shoots the head vampire to save Sam.

The brothers drive to South Dakota to enlist the aid of Bobby, a family friend and fellow hunter. They exorcise demon Meg, then drive to Jefferson City, Missouri to rescue their Dad. Next, the Winchester family retreat to an out of the way location where John reveals himself to be demon-possessed and attacks Dean. Sam shoots his father in the leg to stop him. On the way to the hospital, the Impala gets t-boned by a demon-driven semi.
