Ford City newspaperWhen Dean is critically injured during a hunt, Sam drives them to Ford City, Nebraska seeking a miracle cure. Roy Legrange, an evangelist healer, heals Dean’s damaged heart, but at the cost of another person’s life. Detour: Nixa*, Missouri (Osarks region) 37.04N -93.3E 500

Detour: Fremont, Nebraska 41.44N -96.49E 408
Total Miles (from Henryville, IN- Burkitsville detour): 908
*Detour: The town where Dean is injured and hospitalized is not named. At the time, the brothers were hunting a Rawhead, a mythical beast popular in Ozarks folktales. Nixa, Missouri, the self-described city at the "Crossroads of the Ozarks", makes an aptly labeled substitute. The name “Nixa” is eeriely similar to Nix, a germanic term for a part-animal water creature that, like “Rawhead”, lures naughty children to their doom. Interestingly, Nixa schools are considered the best in the state. Coincidence? Or could there be something in Nixa that is keeping children on their best behavior?… Bwwwaaa.
**Detour: Although President Gerald R. Ford was born in Nebraska, there is no “Ford City” named after him. Not yet, anyway. Fremont, in Dodge county, where 19th century evangelist healer, Maria Beulah Woodworth-Etter once pitched her tent, seems an appropriate substitute.

Trip Note: H.H. Holmes' infamous " Murder Castle" was located in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. Though the hotel no longer exists, the site of his crimes is still remembered.
Trip Note: Interestingly, when I mapped a course to N. Winchester Ave in Chicago, Google maps placed it’s marker at the intersection where N. Winchester Avenue is bisected by the Rosehill cemetery, one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Chicago.
Trip Note: One of the US most haunted cemeteries, Resurrection Cemetery, is located in the Chicago suburb of Justice, IL. This cemetery is home to Chicago’s famous ghost, Resurrection Mary, sometimes called “Bloody Mary”.

Quote: I’m the oldest. Which means I’m always right. -Dean.

Fitchburg Road signA new set of coordinates from their dad sends the brothers to Fitchburg, Wisconsin where a striga, a kind of witch, is making children mortally ill. Against Sam’s objections, Dean recruits a brave young boy to help lure the striga so that they can kill it while it’s vulnerable. This risky plan succeeds and the children recover from their mysterious illness.

Itinerary
Destination Coordinates Dist.
Fitchburg*, Wisconsin 43N -89.44E 996
Total Miles: 996
*Route Fact Check: Fitchburg, Wisconsin is actually spelled with a “U” in burg, not “E”, as depicted in the street sign above. If you click on the thumbnail image, you will see that the same scene also has Fitchburg spelled correctly on a billboard behind the misspelled street sign.
Trip Note: A close look at the street map that Dean uses in this episode, revealed that it is a surprisingly accurate city map of Fitchburg, WI, correct down to the street names and community parks. Even the Dane county jurisdiction name is right. The only fictional item on the map is the hospital.
Trip Note: Devil’s Lake is located 45 miles north of Fitchburg, in the popular Devil’s Lake State Park, near the town of Baraboo.

New Paltz newspaperA haunted painting brings the Winchester brothers to New Paltz, New York, where they enter the world of wealth and privilage…and are promptly thrown out. Sam becomes romantically involved with a woman who helps them locate and destroy the remains of the little girl whose murderous spirit was haunting the painting.

Itinerary
Destination Coordinates Dist.
New Paltz, New York 41.77N -74.08E 961
Total Miles (from Fitchburg, WI): 961
Trip Note: "The New Paltz Standard" (shown above) is a fictional newspaper, but the date of the Titanic headline, April 16, 1912, is the correct date that most newspapers around the country reported the sinking of the titanic.
Trip Note: 27 miles southwest of New Paltz is Sam’s Point, a 4600-ft nature preserve known for it’s (ironically) dwarf pine tree ridge.
Trip Note: Hunter Mountain is located 50 miles north of New Paltz, in the Catskills mountain range- where gnomes and shapeshifters are suspected to roam. For experienced hikers, the Devil’s Path trail takes you over rough terrain to it’s summit. There’s plenty of beer to drink at the summer festivals in this popular vacation area and ski resort, but be careful about accepting tankards from peculiar little men. Rip Van Winkle once did and look what happened to him.

Total Miles (from New Paltz, NY): 1,806
*Detour: There is no city or town of Manning, Colorado. A good alternative destination is Lafayette, Colorado, where the locals believe that there is an actual vampire grave in the old cemetery.
Trip Note: Interestingly, the streets of Lafayette, Colorado are named after characters from the legend of King Arthur and from greek mythology.

1.22 Devil’s Trap

Original Airdate (WB): May 4, 2006

Written By Eric Kripke. Directed By Kim Manners.IMDb LogoTV.com Logo

Quote: An exorcism, are you serious? -Meg. Oh, we’re going for it baby. Head spinning, projectile vomiting, the whole nine yards. -Dean.

Jefferson City sign The brothers drive to South Dakota to enlist the aid of Bobby, a family friend and fellow hunter. They exorcise demon Meg, then drive to Jefferson City, Missouri to rescue their Dad. Next, the Winchester family retreat to an out of the way location where John reveals himself to be demon-possessed and attacks Dean. Sam shoots his father in the leg to stop him. On the way to the hospital, the Impala gets t-boned by a demon-driven semi.

Itinerary

Setting: Highway crash site**, location unknown - .
Detour: Route 83 near Gettysburg, SD 45.0N -100W 41
Total Miles (from Dubuque, IA- Salvation detour): 2,517
*Detour: Bobby’s Auto Salvage did not have any city or township in S. Dakota associated with it. It’s not a coincidence that Jim Beaver, the actor who plays Bobby, also plays a character from S. Dakota on the HBO show, Deadwood. This makes Deadwood, SD the obvious choice for a detour destination.
**Detour: Lake Hiddenwood in Selby, SD seemed an appropriate choice for the location of the remote cabin and Gettysburg, SD, for the highway crash site. Both locations are aptly named and are off of route 83 which is mentioned in the Season 2 followup episode, In My Time of Dying.
